Basic rules to note inline with APA Style of reference list

dir=" ltr">Basic rules to note inline with APA Style of reference list:

1. Alphabetize entries by the first word of the entry. Entries are double spaced and the second line of an entry is a hanging indent of a ½ inch (standard tab space). Use only initials for the first and middle names even if the full name is given. In other words, in APA style the entries are arranged alphabetically according to authors’ names. For instance, author’s surname comes first followed by initials (first and second name if there is), the year of publication, the title of the work, the place of publication and the name of the publisher.

2. Italicize titles of books, plays, pamphlets, newspapers, magazines, journals, films, compact discs, and paintings. Do not put quotation marks around them. Capitalize only the first word of the title and the subtitle, if any, and any proper noun; remember to italicize the title. Enclose additional information like editor, edition, report number etc, in parentheses.

3. For article or chapter title do not italicize the title or place quotation marks around it. Finish the element with a full stop. What should be italicized is the official name of the periodical where the article or chapter was extracted. The initial alphabets of the title of the periodical should be in uppercase and italicized.

4. Give in parentheses the year the work was published (publication date) but for magazines, newspapers, and newsletters, give the year and the exact date the publication (month, and day) enclosed in parentheses.

5. If not date is available, write n.d. in parentheses. n.d stand for no date.

6. For book chapters, articles, web pages, etc., capitalize only the first letter of the first word of a title and subtitle (the first word after a colon or dash).

7. For periodicals (journals, newsletter, magazines), give the volume number after the periodical title; italicize it. Do not use Vol. before the number (i.e. write only the number).

8. Periodical, publishers’ names and locations are generally not included in references, in accordance with long practice.

9. When the author and the publisher are the same, use the word Author as the name of the publisher.

10. After the author’s surname put full stop between the initials and parentheses; after the date of publication in parentheses put full stop; after the title of the work put full stop; after the name of place of publication put colon; after the name of publisher put full stop.
